If you are looking for the absolute heart and soul of Downtown Anaheim, you will find it on the Saturday before Halloween.
Every October, our community comes together to host the Anaheim Fall Festival & Halloween Parade. As one of the oldest, largest, and most beloved Halloween traditions in the United States, this event is more than just a celebration—it is a living piece of Southern California history.
Whether you are a lifelong local, a new resident, or considering a move to the Anaheim area, here is everything you need to know about the history, the modern festival, the parade route, and what to expect on this magical, pumpkin-lit day.
The History: Over a Century of Civic Pride
To truly appreciate this event, you have to go back to its origins in 1923.
Back then, Anaheim was a quiet agricultural hub. Local merchants, looking for a wholesome way to keep neighborhood kids from playing Halloween night pranks (like soaping windows and tipping fences), decided to throw a massive festival instead.
The strategy was a triumph. The very next year, in 1924, the nighttime parade was born. Even baseball legend Babe Ruth served as the Grand Marshal in the early years!
What makes the Anaheim Halloween Parade so special is its enduring, grassroots spirit. While nearby Disneyland is famous for high-tech entertainment, this parade is completely community-driven. Volunteers, local schools, non-profits, and neighborhood businesses still build, repair, and march with the whimsically spooky, artist-designed floats today. It remains a genuine celebration of community heritage.
The Modern Event: Attendance & What to Expect
Today, the single-day celebration attracts tens of thousands of visitors from all over Orange County and Southern California. It has grown into a full-day extravaganza, seamlessly blending Halloween nostalgia, Día de los Muertos, and harvest-season fun.
The Anaheim Fall Festival & Classic Car Show (10:00 AM – 4:00 PM)
The fun begins long before the sun goes down. Center Greens (the park next to Anaheim City Hall and the Downtown Anaheim Community Center) and the historic Center Street Promenade transform into a bustling autumn wonderland featuring:
- The Classic Car Show: Vintage rides, hot rods, and historic vehicles (many decked out in Halloween decor) line the streets.
- Costume Contests: Dedicated showdowns for both kiddos and the incredibly popular doggie costume contest.
- Local Makers & Treats: Dozens of artisan booths, craft stations, game areas, and an array of food trucks and local vendors.
- Live Entertainment: Community stages with musical acts, dance troupes, and puppet shows.
The Nighttime Parade: The Route & Where to Watch (7:00 PM)
The centerpiece of the entire day is, of course, the Anaheim Halloween Parade, which begins promptly at 7:00 PM.
The Route
The parade covers a highly walkable loop through the historic downtown core:
- The Start: The parade steps off near the intersection of Anaheim Boulevard and Broadway (right near the Anaheim Packing District and City Hall).
- The Turn: It head west, turning onto the pedestrian-friendly Center Street Promenade.
- The Stretch: From Center Street, it connects back to Broadway, traveling west down the historic corridor.
- The End: The parade finishes at the intersection of Broadway and West Street.
Pro-Tips for Spectators:
- Claim Your Spot Early: Locals start setting up folding chairs and blankets along the Broadway and Center Street Promenade sidewalks early in the afternoon. If you want a front-row view, plan to secure your spot by 4:00 or 5:00 PM.
- Dinner Strategy: Since the festival ends at 4:00 PM and the parade doesn’t start until 7:00 PM, use that three-hour gap to grab dinner! The route is packed with incredible local spots, from the diverse options at the Anaheim Packing House to the sit-down eateries on Center Street. (Just be sure to make reservations or expect a wait!).
- Park Smart: Street closures are extensive. Utilize the parking structures on Lemon Street, Oak Street, or the Packing District, but aim to arrive early to avoid gridlock.
